Riverfront Master Plan

HELP PLAN THE FUTURE OF RIVERFRONT PARK
Staff Preparing Master Plan to Stay Relevant for Next Generations

Exciting changes could be in store for Riverfront Park and each citizen has a chance to shape the future of the Park.

Three community meetings have been scheduled to allow for public discussion and feedback regarding the proposed Riverfront Park Master Plan.  The goal of any considered updates would be to continue the legacy of Expo ’74 while keeping the downtown park relevant for generations to come.

Stakeholders and past participants of City of Spokane Parks and Recreation programs have been surveyed electronically regarding the proposed master plan.  In those surveys, respondents favored retaining open space and grassy meadows as well as preserving or enhancing the Looff Carrousel. Previous survey results suggest that park patrons are ready for new amenities at Riverfront Park – provided that park history is preserved.

Community meetings are scheduled as follows and all are encouraged to attend:

May 24 6pm-8pm   West Central Community Center         1603 W. Belt

May 29 6pm-8pm   Southside Senior Activity Center         3151 E. 27th Ave.

May 31 6pm-8pm   Hillyard Senior Center                          4001 N. Cook St.

4th of July Daypass

4th of July Community Parade

Riverfront Park is proud to host the first ever community parade on the pathways in Riverfront Park. All are invited to participate or cheer on the celebration. The community event is in addition to our 4th of July celebration that promotes the principals which our country was founded upon: diversity, leadership, freedom and unity.

The parade begins at 1pm from the Spokane Falls Skyride and will traverse the park ending up at the ClockTower Stage.  For a special treat, bring the kids down to the Numerica Credit Union Children’s Area between 11:30am and 12:30pm for face painting and free flags while supplies last.  All are welcome to join us and we ask that you arrive decked out in your holiday finest to show your patriotism.

The parade will showcase local military heroes aboard the Spokane Falls Northern Railway while accompanied by the sounds of a drum and bugle core. Many other elements are included in the new community focused addition to Riverfront Park's 4th of July Celebration.

This year only the parade will host both the Spokane Thunder drum and bugle corp. and a special guest The Blue Knights from Denver Colorado.  This award winning performance team includes 150 members and will certainly provide quality entertainment.

Don't miss this opportunity to show your patriotic spirit as a participant or a spectator.

ABOUT THE CONSULTANT

The City of Spokane Parks & Recreation Department has hired the organization GP RED to research and develop a master plan for the department.

GP RED is a non-profit organization developed to fully recognize and expand research, education, and resource development activities for community “quality of life” agencies.

National Carousel Association Collection

National Carousel Associate #1

This Flower Draped Jumper is a horse on the second row of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company carousel #17. It was manufactured in 1908 as a showpiece for Riverview Park in Chicago, Illinois.

This magnificent carousel has five rows, the inner four of which are all jumpers, and four elaborate chariots. Construction was supervised by master carver Leo Zoller.

National Carousel Association #2

The Parrot Horse was carved by Charles Looff in 1909. The horse is on the outside row of a three row carousel now operating at Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington.

One of Looff’s finest creations, the Carousel was originally installed in Natatorium Park and moved to Riverfront Park in 1975.

National Carousel Association #3

The Gypsy Queen is a Dentzel stander from the Libertyland Grand Carousel in Memphis, Tennessee. This horse is on the outside row of a three-row machine originally built by Gustov Dentzel in 1909 and restored in 1922.

National Carousel Association #4

Alexander was named by the employees of the Knobels Amusement Resort, near Elysberg, Pennsylvania. In his gleaming armour, he looks like a steed Alexander The Great might have ridden into battle.

“Alexander” was crafted by Russian-immigrant woodcarver Charles Carmel, and stands on the outside row of the Grand Carousel at Knoebels.

National Carousel Association #5

Hippocampus gets its name from the Greek for horse (“hippo”) and fish (“campus”).

The swirling, twisted mane of a horse and curved, shining tale of a leaping fish meld together in this icon of Greco-Roman mythology. The Hippocampus was carved by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1905 for the carousel now residing in Kit Carson County, Burlington, Colorado.

National Carousel Association #6

Centurion is a show piece, just like its home carousel in Crescent Park, in East Providence, RI. From one of the most beautiful carousels in existence, with an active pose and sparkling jewels, it looks like a horse a Roman noble might have ridden.

The gold eagle adds to the glitter of a horse already dripping in gold trappings. It was nicknamed “Centurion” in honor of the 100th anniversary of its home, originally built by Charles Looff in 1895.

National Carousel Association #7

The Tassel Horse stands on the outside row of the gorgeous carousel at Hershey Park, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia Toboggan Company produced this carousel (PTC #47) in 1919.

This prancing beauty, with its bowed neck, looks like a parade horse with its tassels swinging and the gold fringe swaying, and is another show piece on a carousel full of show pieces.

National Carousel Association #8

Lillie Belle may be considered the most beautiful horse produced by the Parker Carousel Factory. Designed in 1914, a “Lillie Belle” was installed on all their subsequent carousels, including the 1921 C.W. Parker carousel at Jantzen Beach Super Center, in Portland Oregon.

The flowing mane, the bunch of grapes on the hip, and the jewelry on the side became the trademarks of this incredibly sculpted horse.

National Carousel Association #9

This beautifully carved Gustav Dentzel Lion features a full mane and exceptionally detailed muscles and veins. A blonde bathing beauty tugs at the mane on the romance side. Even the reverse side of this Dentzel figure has unique detailing with an unusual tufted blanket.

The lion rides the carousel in the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Indiana, along with many other unusual menagerie animals, plus 31 horses and two small chariots. It was originally carved in the Dentzel Factory in Philadelphia, PA in 1900.

National Carousel Association #10

This Trojan Jumper “Commanche” was carved in 1916 at the Allan Herschell factory in Tonawanda, NY . That factory is now the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum where “Commanche” rides what is believed to be the first carousel shipped from that factory. The Trojan mane is an excellent example of the horses produced there.

With large head, chunky body, and legs gathered underneath in a gallop, Commanche exemplifies Allan Herschell carousel horses. But the rare blue eye on the romance side makes him even more special.

National Carousel Association #11

This Dappled Rose Jumper with the many flowers and flying mane is an outstanding example of the style of carving produced by Solomon Stein and Harry Goldstein.

From their Brooklyn-based company, they made some of the biggest carousel horses, endowed with the bony looking head, large teeth, laid back ears, and protruding rose decoration as seen on this horse.

National Carousel Assocation #12

M. C. Illions Armored Jumper, Columbus Zoo, Powell, Ohio. Marcus Illions came to America in 1888. A lifelong woodcarver, he set up his own shop in Brooklyn in 1892. He carved for Looff and later supplied William Mangels with wooden figures and moved his shop into the Mangels factory.

In the late 1980’s, Jerry Betts, formed the Columbus Carousel Fund to preserve the Illions carousel. His sudden death in 1990 slowed the fundraising. In 1992, Jim Grissinger, and Zoo Board Chairman Gil Kirk, met to rekindle Jerry’s dream. In a sense, this reproduction of the M.C. Illions armored jumper, is dedicated to the efforts of Jerry Betts, and all the others who worked so hard to make this dream come true.

Spokane Riverfront Park Collection

Riverfront Park #1

“Oliver’s Pride”, so named because it was Bill Oliver’s favorite, is one of the six “armoured” horses personally sculpted by Charles Looff for the carousel.

Riverfront Park #2

“Snow Dancer” is an example of Charles Looff’s famous Coney Island carving style, and one of the few he carved with a closed mouth smile.

Riverfront Park #3

Looff was the only carousel manufacturer to produce a tiger in this stalking, pouncing pose. Of those three, only “Sneaky” can still be seen and ridden on an operating machine. The other two are in private collections.

Riverfront Park #4

“Looffun” was always a favorite of Geri Sperling, step-daughter of Lloyd Vogel, the owner of Natatorium Park.

Riverfront Park #5

Looff carved this magnificent horse in a full gallop. “Rainbow Warrior” strains at the bit, charging into the wind.

Riverfront Park #6

“Daisy” - also known as the"Wishing Horse”. Legend has it, if you catch the Brass Ring while riding her, your wish will come true.

Riverfront Park #7

Dressed in Gothic style, “Chastity” boasts medieval jewelry and the signature Looff front piece in a star pattern.

Riverfront Park #8

“Cisco” - Carved in “Stargazer style”, head back and ready to lunge forward.

Riverfront Park #9

“Warrior”

Riverfront Park #10

Purchase a piece of history with this poster commemorating the 100 year celebration of Spokane’s own Looff carrousel.  Each poster is $24.98 per poster, plus tax.  These posters can be ordered by contacting Debby Dodsonor calling 509.625.6623.  A $10 shipping and handling charge will be assessed per order and individuals are able to order up to 8 posters.

Wooden carrousels have great artistic and historic value. To commemorate this, Riverfront Park produces a limited edition miniature carrousel horse replica every year. Sculpted by carrousel enthusiast, Jerry Reinhardt, each replica is about 9 inches long, with an 11 1/2 inch brass pole. The pole is mounted on a beveled wooden base with an engraved plaque.

Click here to view the Spokane Riverfront Park Collection.

The National Carousel Association also produces miniature carrousel horse replicas. The NCA is a non-profit organization. Sales profits from the NCA replicas are directed to their preservation fund. This preservation fund supports their efforts to preserve and restore wooden carrousels at the local level.

These replicas are a great gift idea for carrousel enthusiasts. Or, you could buy one for yourself and take the beauty of the carrousel home with you!

WELCOME TO RIVERFRONT PARK

Spokane Falls

The Spokane River Falls are Spokane’s finest natural attraction, as well as the heart of Riverfront Park.  Located in the core of Spokane, the falls of the Spokane River flow and often rage as the seasons change.  The Spokane River flows from Lake Coeur d’Alene to Lake Roosevelt and the Spokane Falls are perhaps the most dramatic transition along the 111 mile run.  From the earliest of times, the Spokane Falls were a gathering place for the Spokane Tribe of Indians as a source of food and beauty.  Many generations later the falls became a gathering place for all nations with EXPO 74 and is still shared daily by people from around the world.

Early settlement around the falls began in 1871 with the construction of a water driven sawmill on the south bank of the river. In 1873 the original sawmill was purchased, along with 160 acres, with the hidden intent of establishing a town.  Within only a few years, the development of the City of Spokane had begun and industry began to take over the downtown riverfront.  In the late 1940’s the beautiful and bountiful Spokane Falls had fallen victim to industrial pollution, rail yards, and factories.  By 1961 the falls industrial district had become a focus of concern and the City of Spokane adopted its first Master Plan for this area focused on urban renewal.  In 1964 the city adopted the Riverfront and Great Gorge Park Development Statement which directed new urban projects to clean up and improve the riverfront area.  Conceptually this ideal opened the doors for revitalization which came to fruition in the form of the 1974 Worlds Fair.  The world expo, ironically, was focused on environmentalism and provided the perfect platform for revitalization and a green future.  The newly restored Riverfront Park drew people to the falls, brought the green message and prosperity to the people of Spokane on many levels.

Today the Spokane Falls are a pristine Northwest attraction drawing tens of thousands of spectators throughout the year.  The best time of the year to view the alls is in early spring when the winter run-off rages.  The best view of the falls comes from the gondola cars of the Spokane Falls SkyRide.  There are as well several stationary viewpoints throughout the park.  These viewpoints are highlighted on our park map which can be downloaded from this site.  We look forward to sharing this spectacular regional treasure with you upon your next visit to the park.  Don’t forget to bring your camera.

Food Vendor Information

Riverfront Park embraces a full schedule of family entertainment and events such as First Night Spokane, Bloomsday Post-Race Celebration, Spokane’s 4th of July Community Celebration, Hoopfest, Unity in the Community, Kid’s Day, Spokane Falls Northwest Indian Encampment & Powwow, Pig-Out in the Park, plus many outdoor concerts & other community activities, all located in Spokane’s Premiere Playground.  If you are looking to become a food vendor during events we ask that you contact Sam Song at ssong@spokanecity.org .  For all other vending opportunities please contact Dale Larsen at dlarsen@spokanecity.org .  Thank you for your interest in this opportunity.

Garbage Goat

The Garbage Goat in Riverfront Park was designed by Sister Paula Turnbull, a Catholic nun for Expo ‘74 as a recycling/environment statement.

This corten steel sculpture of a goat will eat small pieces of trash with the aid of its vacuum digestive system.  Don’t throw your garbage on the ground, feed it to the Garbage Goat.

Sponsorship Opportunities

America IS another name for opportunity and at no time during the year is this opportunity more distinguished then on July 4th, the celebration of our nation’s independence.  People of all races, creeds and colors join together to embrace the freedoms bestowed on our nation by our founding fathers.  We would like to invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to support our community, and more over to champion the principals which are the foundation of our great nation.

The Inland Northwest provides its people myriad options as to how they will celebrate the 4th of July, options as diverse as the people themselves.  From the small family gathering in their backyard, to the grandest celebration with tens of thousands of people in the heart of downtown, people love to celebrate Independence Day.  This year we will again offer entertainment of all kinds which will culminate in a spectacular fireworks show in the heart of downtown.  All of this will be provided as a free service to the people of the Inland Northwest thanks to the generous support of our sponsors.  That’s where we invite you to come play with us.

We have already started work on our 2012 celebration and have created various sponsorship levels accompanied by outstanding rewards which reach far beyond the cost of your financial support. Together with our media partners, we offer onsite, offsite, pre-event, post-event, electronic and print media recognition for your business.  In addition, we offer access for you, your staff or your clients to join us in the park and take advantage of the rides and attractions we offer.  Most of all we offer you an opportunity to become a tangible part of this celebration of freedom, independence and opportunity which is America.  Individualized sponsorship packages are also available which can be tailored to your business needs.  Please consider supporting this wonderful community event and joining us as we celebrate these great United States.

Points of Interest

Havermale Island

Havemale Island is located just north of the South Howard Bridge.  The island was named after Reverend Samuel Havermale, an early Spokane settler.  In 1877, this island was used as a pioneer stronghold during a battle with the Nez Perce Indians. Until 1974, Havermale Island was also home to the Great NOrthern Railrod Depot.

Pavilion

The Pavilion is located in the center of the park on Havermale Island.  During the World’s Fair, the Pavilion had a white canvas cover.  In 1978 the canvas cover started to tear so much that it was taken down and replaced with the permanent roof underneath which gives our Pavilion an open air feel.  There is about 4.5 miles of cable in the structure and it is held in place by a steel frame that weighs about 200 tons.  From October through March, the Pavilion is turned into a regulation size ice rink and was voted one of the top 10 outdoor skating rinks in the nation.

Expo Exhibitor Plaques

Just west of the Forestry Shelter are the plaques indicating the location of the Philippine and German exhibits.  The plaque showing the location of the USSR Pavilion, which was the second largest exhibit on the Fairgrounds, is located south of the Forestry Shelter.  The plaque showing the location of the Australian Pavilion is just north of the Lilac bowl.  The Australian government placed the sundial there after the Fair ended.  The Korean Pavilion was also in this location.  The Plaza of Nations plaque is located due north of the South Howard Bridge near the Japanese Gardens.  Around the outside ring you will see a list of all the countries who were exhibitors at Expo ’74.  The plaque on the front was placed there in 1999 honoring the 25th anniversary of the World’s Fair.

President’s Tree

The small tree located just east of the Washington Overpass on the south channel of the river is the President’s Tree.  It was planted here by President George Bush Sr. in 1991.  The original tree was moved to the Finch Arboretum due to vandalism.  This is a representation of that tree.

Lewis and Clark High School Bench

Made from the rubble of the Lewis and Clark High School remodeling project, the bench is located just north and east of the South Howard Bridge.

Canada Island

Canada Island, known as Crystal Island prior to the World’s Fair, was the location of the first water pumping plant in 1884 and is located just north of the blue bridge in the center of the Park.  The main occupant of the island was the Crystal Laundry and Water Works, you can see the brick remains from the southern suspension bridge.  After the Fair the island was renamed Canada Island, the main part of their exhibit was in the brown building.  A group of Canadian Indians were a part of the group who came from Canada to participate in Expo 74.  While they were here they built two Totem Poles.  They also performed their native dances throughout the day in the dirt circle called Alberta Amphitheater.  Other small group performances would also use this small stage.

Inspiration Point

Inspiration Point, located on the southeast side of the then North Howard Bridge, was finished in 1974.  It is a nice place to go to enjoy the view of the river and Willie Willey Rock.  Born in Mt. Ayr, Iowa on September 15th, 1884, Willie settled in Spokane.  Known as a nature boy or mountain man, Willie traveled all over the country with many unusual pets.  Due to his uniqueness, the media gave him much publicity.  When asked his location, he would always say “Spokane.”  Because of all the good publicity we received from his travels, Willie was known as Spokane’s unofficial Ambassador of Good Will.

The Butterfly

One of the six butterflies that were used to mark the entrances and exits to the World’s Fair sites back in 1974, the Butterfly is located just North of the North Howard Bridge.  While two of the butterflies were originally saved, the other one was located at the SkyRidge, but was removed in 2004.  It was at this gate that the one-millionth guest came through the turnstile into the Fairgrounds.

Upper Falls Power Plant

The Upper Falls Power Plant, located on the northwest side of Havermale Island near the suspension bridge, is owned by Avista Corp.  They own two power plants within the park.  The other one is at the base of the lower falls and can be seen from the SkyRide.

Thomas R. Adkison Theme Stream

The Thomas R. Adkison Theme Stream connects the west portion of Havermale Island to the rest of the Park.  Thomas R. Adkison was an executive architect for Expo ’74.  The theme stream is a symbolic re-creation of Havermale Island and was dedicated on May 12, 1988.  Occasionally there is a beaver that occupies this theme stream.

History, Arts & Culture

Riverfront Park occupies 100 acres of land and water with a rich and varied history. Spokane Falls and the surrounding land has long been a gathering place for people. Native Americans gathered and fished at the falls. In the late 1800’s, pioneers settled here and started the city of Spokane. The railroad industry fueled the city’s growth and rail yards covered Havermale Island, the present site of Riverfront Park.

Learn more about the history of Spokane Falls and see them for yourself by taking a scenic SkyRide.

In 1974, Spokane hosted Exposition ‘74, “The World’s Fair.” In preparation for Expo ‘74, the Spokane River was cleaned up, the rail yards were removed, and the Great Northern Railroad Depot on Havermale Island was demolished. Our Clocktower is all that remains of the 1902 depot. View pictures and read more about the history of Spokane Parks and Expo '74.

Our historic 1909 Looff Carrousel (from Natatorium Park) is a family favorite.

And, while you’re here, check out “The Spokane Sculpture Walk,” which highlights the sculptures in Riverfront Park and the Centennial Trail. The downtown segment of the Centennial Trail passes through Riverfront Park.

Riverfront Park (the legacy of Expo ‘74) continues to be a popular gathering place for local residents and tourists. We also host a variety of community events during the year, so there is always something fun to do! Browse our site for more information.

Sculpture Walk

This is a guide to sculpture in Spokane’s Riverfront Park and along the Centennial Trail. It begins on the Washington State University’s downtown campus and ends on the southeast corner of the Monroe Street Bridge adjacent to the Spokane Falls overlook. See below for more information or click the link to the right to download the brochure courtesy of the Spokane Arts Commission.

(1) Alive, Lively, Living

by Jim Hodges. 2008.Fabricated from three stainless steel panels, the sculpture has irregular edges on the tops and sides. Hodges calls the work, “a paradox of solid steel and open windows a fusion of manmade modernity and natural environment.”

(2) Light Reading

by Peter Reiquam. 2006. This work of “outdoor furniture” works both as a seating area and a beautiful aesthetic object. Commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission, Light Reading is located at the southeast corner of the WSU Academic Building.

(3) Cooperation

by Michiro Kosuge. 1998. A series of sculptures with granite boulders and basalt columns are located on the Washington State University downtown campus near the University’s Health Science and Interdisciplinary Design Institute.

(4) Riverpoint Observatory

by Montana artist, Patrick Zentz. 2002. In this piece, Zentz aggregated symbols of the specific environment. Features of the piece include the topography of Mount Spokane, the Spokane River, and the elements of climate. It encourages viewers to look at the intricacies of the landscape, the incidence of time and the apparent chaos of the atmosphere.

(5) Shamil

by Anatoli Abgudaev. 1991. This hammered copper sculpture was a gift to the people of Spokane from our former Sister City, Makhachkala, Russia. Depicting a folk hero and general, the sculpture stands for the preference of peace over war, and the importance of freedom as a basis for peace.

(6) East-West Arbor

by Jody Pinto. 1990. This environmental artwork creates a viewing area for the Spokane River. The arbor joins both East and West with a symbolic threshing floor. The arbor is also surrounded by “Gift Gardens” planted to represent Spokane’s Sister Cities.

(7) From this Earth

by by Glenn Emmons. 1994. This is a larger than life bronze sculpture which commemorates the Centennial (1895-1995) of the Mining Association. It depicts a hard-rock miner checking the quality of the ore he is extracting.

(8) Michael P. Anderson Memorial

by Dorothy Fowler. 2006. Michael P. Anderson gave his life exploring Space. This Spokane resident perished along with six other heroes in the Columbia Space Shuttle Tragedy in 2003.

(9) The Call and the Challenge

by Ken Spiering. 1986. This sculpture was commissioned in recognition of the centennial of Sacred Heart Medical Center.

(10) Untitled (lantern)

by Harold Balazs. 1974. A concrete sculpture in the form of a large scale Japanese Lantern.

(11) Moon Crater

by Glen Michaels. Expo ‘74. An abstract bronze sculpture of a moon crater with wood textures.

(12) Aluminum Fountain

by George Tsutakawa. 1974. A tall aluminum fountain in an abstract style located on the south side of the Spokane Opera House. In his lifetime, Tsutakawa created more than 80 fountains in the U.S. and in Japan.

(13) Centennial Sculpture

by Harold Balazs. 1978. An abstract aluminum sculpture which floats in the Spokane River.

(14) The Childhood Express

by Ken Spiering. 1990. Spokane’s “Red Wagon” sculpture was created in honor of Washington State’s 1989 Centennial. It was a gift from the Junior League of Spokane, many local businesses and the Spokane Arts Commission to the children of Spokane.

(15) Goat

by Sister Paula Turnbull. This corten steel sculpture of a goat will eat small pieces of trash with the aid of its vacuum digestive system.

(16) Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial

by Deborah Copenhaver. 1984. The names of all deceased Vietnam veterans from the Spokane area are engraved in the sculpture’s pedestal.

(17) Australian Sundial

by Sister Paula Turnbull. This life-size sundial was created for Expo ‘74 and contains many symbolic Australian animals.

(18) Mountain Sheep

by Ken Spiering and students. This corten steel sculpture depicts a mountain sheep climbing the rocks.

(19) Rotary Riverfront Fountain

by Harold Balazs & Bob Perron. 2005. This interactive, monumental abstract structure is both a “big sprinkler” for child’s play and visual play. It was commissioned by Rotary Club 21 with support from donations from the community.

(20) The Joy of Running Together

by David Govedare. 1984. This corten steel sculpture depicts runners of all kinds. It celebrates the Spokane tradition of Bloomsday, the largest timed road running race in the world.

(21) The Place Where Ghosts of Salmon Jump

by Sherman Alexie. This piece of artwork is a poem engraved in granite and formed into a spiral on the ground. The poem is about the Spokane Falls which can be seen from where the poem is written. It is also representative of the Spokane heritage.

Funding made possible by the City of Spokane Lodging Tax Grant & the Washington State Arts Commission along with the Spokane Arts Commission. For more arts information, visit spokanearts.org.

Clocktower

The Clocktower on Havermale Island was originally part of the Great Northern Railroad Depot. Construction began in 1901 and finished in 1902. The depot was an impressive brick building 3 stories tall, with the monumental Clocktower standing in at 155 feet.

The Clocktower’s South wall was part of the depot’s exterior, while the lower portions of the North, East, and West walls resided in the building.
If you look closely at the East and West walls (about halfway up) you will see a sloping line where the roof was originally located.

During 1972 and 1973, long after the “glory days” of train travel, the Great Northern Railroad Depot was demolished as Spokane made preparations for Expo’ 74. The Clocktower was able to be preserved and serves as a reminder of Spokane’s railroad history.

This 110 year-old “giant grandfather clock” is wound by hand once a week. The clockworks are housed in a small room behind the 4 clock faces. Each week, a technician climbs 5 stories to reach the clockworks. It takes 99 turns of the crank to rewind the clock.

The pendulum weighs about 200 pounds and is suspended from a thin strip of metal. The counterweights hang from cables and descend approximately 40 feet between windings. If the time needs to be adjusted, it is done from inside the clockworks room.

The clock hands on each face are attached to a shaft which connects to a U-joint in the clockworks. Each clock face measures 9 feet in diameter. At the top of every hour, the clocktower can be heard throughout the park. The sound of the electronic chimes is amplified through speakers in the top of the tower.

Red Wagon

Artist: Ken Spiering

“The Childhood Express”

Have you ever seen a red wagon this big?

This “larger than life” symbol of childhood is also an interactive sculpture. The handle doubles as a slide! Relax on a park bench and enjoy the beauty of the park while your kids play. Or hey, slide down the handle yourself! (We won’t tell anyone…)

The Junior League of Spokane plaque dated August 18, 1990 reads: This sculpture is dedicated to Spokane’s children, as a reflection of the past, created in the present, to last into the future.

Facts about the Red Wagon

  * Created for the Centennial Celebration of Children - 1989
  * Dimensions - 12’ high x 12’ wide x 27’ long.
  * Weight - 26 tons.
  * Made of steel and reinforced concrete.
  * Will hold as many as 300 people supporting 100 lbs. per square foot.
  * 43” high edges with the rounded pinch points removed.
  * Curbing ranges from 6’ to 10’ away from the sculpture itself.

Riverfront Rotary Fountain

The Riverfront Park Rotary Fountain is now open.

The Riverfront Park Rotary Fountain is located on Howard Street at the South entrance to Riverfront Park. It is a popular attraction for beating the Summer heat. The kids love it!

Dedicated on September 1st, 2005 to “the people of Spokane” and under the care of the Spokane Parks Department, the fountain is destined to be a popular attraction for many years to come. The Downtown Spokane Rotary Club 21 and the Spokane Parks Department worked together to make the fountain a reality. Financial support was also provided by numerous donors whose names appear around the fountain. Harold Balazs is the artist.

The fountain has 5 stainless steel columns that are 24 feet tall. These support a 30 foot diameter ring containing 40 overhead jets. The jets spray towards the middle of the fountain producing a dome of water and a waterfall in the fountain’s center. Eight geysers shoot water upwards. The fountain also has dozens of mist jets, and the 5 boulders have jets that spray sideways. To conserve water, the fountain water is filtered and recirculated.

You can catch the fountain in action from Spring to Fall, 6am to midnight.

For more information, contact 509.625.6601.

The City of Spokane’s Park and Recreation Department’s 1909 Looff Carrousel proudly celebrated its Centennial in 2009.   This magnificent carrousel has been in the City of Spokane since it first began operation which is significant for both the city and this carrousel.  The 54 horses, 1 giraffe, 1 tiger and 2 chariot benches are all original and have woven themselves into the fabric of our community.  With over 300,000 riders a year, the carrousel is undoubtedly the most popular attraction in Spokane.

About the Riverfront Park Looff Carrousel & Gift Shop

Charles Looff, a master craftsman, created the Carrousel as a wedding gift for his daughter Emma.  On July 18, 1909, Riverfront Park’s cherished Looff Carrousel began operation in Natatorium Park, an amusement park on the bank of the Spokane River on the west side of Spokane.  After entertaining many generations of children and families, “The Nat” closed its doors for good in 1967 and the Carrousel was put in storage.  In the early 1970s a plan was discussed to bring the Carrousel out of storage to display it during Expo 74.  But, concerned that the crowds could damage the hand-carved Carrousel, it remained in storage for one more year and made its debut in Riverfront Park in 1975 in a building that had been constructed for Expo.  Fortunately for the City’s residents and visitors alike, the Carrousel has remained in Spokane all these years and to date all, of the Carrousel’s original figures are still making their rounds, and they look as good (or maybe even better) today as they did in 1909.

The Carrousel has a self guided walking tour available during hours of operation.

Oliver's Pride Romance Side

While you're watching a carousel from the sidelines, it's easy to miss the fact that all carousel horses are not created equal. In fact, not only is there a difference between horses, but also between sides of the same horse!

Our carousel rotates counter-clockwise. So all of the carousel animals are positioned with their right sides facing outward. This side (which is most visible to the public) is known as the romance side. The jewels, the most ornate carvings and the nicest artistry appear only on this side.

Oliver's Pride Money Side

The left side of the horse is known as the money side. When the customers are getting on this side of the horse, they have already paid their money. (Mounting a horse from the left side is standard throughout the world. Horses are trained for this, and may buck off a would-be rider attempting to mount from the other side.)

The figures in the outside ring are not only the most intricate, they're also the largest. The inside ring figures are the smallest.

The difference in detail between the sides was probably done more for cost savings than for any other reason. The decreasing size of the horses in the inner rings provided a cost savings too, though it was somewhat of a necessity as the diameter of the inner rings is smaller than that of the outer ring.

No real statistics have been kept on our carrousel over the years. However, by making some assumptions based around the number of rides per hour, the number of riders per ride and the number of months per year and hours per day that the carrousel was open, the following statistics have been estimated.

How Many Riders?
It's been estimated our carrousel gave rides to about 13 million riders during its days at Nat Park. Since it opened in Riverfront Park in 1975, it has averaged about 275,000 riders per year, for an additional 7,975,000 riders, bringing the total to almost 21 million riders.

How Many Rides?
We estimate that an average ride on our carrousel runs for 3 1/2 minutes with about 20 riders on board. During that time, the carrousel makes 14 revolutions at a speed of 7mph at the outer row of the platform. And since it opened in 1909, our carrousel has been operated for more than 1,000,000 rides and nearly 15,000,000 revolutions.

How Many Miles?
In its 14 revolutions per ride, the outer rows of our carrousel travel more than four tenths of a mile. So during their lifetimes, our carousel figures have each travelled more than 435,000 miles, the distance to the moon and most of the way back. And if you multiply 435,000 miles times 56 (the number of figures on our carrousel), that comes to 24 1/2 million miles, or 1000 times around the equator of the earth.

How Many Lights?
There are 180 lights on our carrousel, and all of them turn with the carrousel. Each light is a 25 watt clear light bulb.

How Many Mirrors?
There are 14 mirrors on each of the carrousel's 20 rounding boards (the curved section on the overhead section of the carrousel). Another 40 mirrors turn with the center section of the carrousel and there are 11 stationary mirrors in the center section, for a total of 333 mirrors.

How Many Rings?
Our plastic rings are supposed to be returned after each ride is over. However, a few rings do leave the building. How many? According to the Dana Saad company (who provide the rings for our carousel), our carousel requires 50,000 rings each year. This means that there's about one ring taken for every 6 riders. So it's likely that about 3,500,000 rings have disappeared from our carousel since 1909! Occasionally when a concerned mother or father finds out that their children have borrowed a ring or two, they put the rings into an envelope (with no return address) and mail them back to the park.

How Many Jewels?
A total of 1056 jewels have been used to decorate our Coney Island style carrousel figures. They range in size from 1/2 inch to 2 inches. All of them are European stained glass jewels with the exception of Geri Giraffe. She is estimated to be older than the rest of the figures on our carousel, and is decorated with mirrored glass jewels.

How Many Tails?
Our carrousel has 54 horses which require real horsehair tails. These tails are estimated to require replacement every 10 years. Estimating 8 replacements plus the original tail for each figure, our carousel has required 486 tails since it was new.

How Many Pipes in the Band Organ?
Our Ruth band organ has over 300 pipes, the equivalent of a 60 piece band.

Dark Shadows

Director Tim Burton brings the cult classic series "Dark Shadows" to the GIANT screen in a film featuring an all-star cast, led by Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter.
In the year 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from England to
start a new life in America, where they build a fishing empire in the coastal Maine town that comes to carry their name: Collinsport. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of falling in love with a beauty named Josette DuPres (Bella Heathcote) and breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death—turning him into a vampire, and then burying him…alive.  Nearly two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972, a stranger in an even stranger time. Returning to Collinwood Manor, he finds that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin, and the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

 About our IMAX:

The Riverfront Park IMAX boasts the largest indoor free standing screen in the Pacific Northwest offering an experience, not just a movie.  Viewing a movie at the IMAX allows you to experiance the clarity of the picture which intensifies the details of every image through the use of IMAX proprietary film technology.  Finally the Riverfront Park IMAX Theatre incorporates an exclusive digital six channel sound system which will immerse your senses as you EXPERIENCE IMAX.

What makes the difference between the Riverfront Park IMAX Theatre image vs. other area theatres? The 70 millimeter IMAX film used in our films are 10 times larger than the standard film used in standard theatres. Each film frame is 3 inches by 2 3/4 inches.   Each frame is pulled through the projector at 24 frames per second thus providing a much higher quality image presentation.  These images are then projected onto the screen via a 4,500 watt Zenon lamp.  There is conjecture that if this lamp were turned on uncovered outside of the IMAX theatre, it would be bright enough to be seen in space.  The final images are presented onto a screen which is over 53 feet tall by 69 feet wide.

Hear More

MAX film does not include an embedded a soundtrack on the film as do other film theatres.  A separate digital 6-track recording is synchronized to the film frames.  These audio tracks are played directly off a hard disk drive which is then distributed directly to the amplifiers rather than using a decoding method, such as Dolby Digital.  The audio is then presented via our six speaker system producing a three dimensional effect. This method of production accounts for our higher quality sound experience.

The Riverfront Park IMAX theatre also has assisted listening devices available for persons with hearing impairments.  Our wireless system offers both standard wireless receivers with Ear Speakers and “T” coil neck loops for patrons with applicable hearing aids. Please consult our staff at the concessions counter for assisted listening devices.

Feel More

The original IMAX Theatre at Riverfront Park was built for the World’s Fair - Expo 74 and was located under the U.S. Pavilion tent structure.  The system was only the 3rd IMAX film system in existence at the time.  The present IMAX facility was designed and constructed in its current location in 1978.  The Riverfront Park IMAX theatre was designed exclusively to accommodate the IMAX experience.  The increase resolution of the film has allowed the audience to be much closer to the screen and the theatre seating is placed at a much higher angle than typical conventional theatres.  This design allows viewers to experience the show throughout their entire field of vision and feel as if they are inside of the movie.

Incidentally, the term IMAX stands for Image MAXimum.
